INTRODUCTION
Food systems: Opportunities and challenges in leveraging product sustainability information to shape more sustainable food supply and demand
The session shared insights and recommendations in communicating food sustainability for shaping both supply and demand.
On the one hand, this session addressed the challenges of communicating sustainability information of food products to consumers, aiming to discuss how consumer information tools can influence consumers’ choices.
On the other hand, business sector representatives shared their experiences on the benefits of integrating product sustainability information as part of their corporate procurement, marketing and sales strategies, such as strengthening communication channels with consumers, improving business competitiveness and designing a more sustainable product portfolio.
Finally, the session addressed the need for complementary actions in the enabling environment, such as policies or initiatives that focus on generating both demand and supply of sustainable (in this case specifically “organic”) products, including by working with supermarkets at the strategic level to supports them in expanding sustainable product lines, presenting products more attractively in-store and communicating more effectively about “the why” of sustainability to consumers.
