INTRODUCTION
The fashion sector generates huge impacts on the environment, being responsible for 10% of the global carbon emissions and 20% of global water waste (European Parliament). In addition, 92 million tons of clothes are disposed of (Fashion Revolution), and 85% of all garments end up in landfill (Calpirg). The current context shows it is urgent to innovate towards a more circular economy, through new business models and engaging consumers in more sustainable behavior in fashion.
This session addressed business and consumers’ experience of product lifetime extension in the fashion sector and aims to discuss the role of providing product information on environmental and social impact to enable more conscious choices.
Innovative businesses shared opportunities behind implementing product lifetime extension practices (second-hand, repair, reuse, upcycling, etc) and how reliable product sustainability information can strengthen corporate strategy and engage consumers. The session intended to encourage other organizations to shift to more sustainable business models by implementing the best practices. UNEP’s initiatives in the textile sector focused on circularity will be presented, as well as the forthcoming activities to which businesses will be invited to join.
Increasing transparency and enhancing traceability to the sector is key for brands that want to produce in a more sustainable way and encourage a more sustainable consumption. How should the industry, the producers, especially SMEs, be involved to make it happen?
