Changing how we eat: the power of food

THE RECORDING OF THE SESSION IS AVAILABLE

Nature and food systems are inextricably connected. Together they should thrive and rely on the services each provide. However, we are far from this vision. Food systems today destabilize our planet and fail to provide all people with healthy and nutritious diets that stay within planetary boundaries. Sustainable production, consumption, and the fight against pollution are key thematic areas of the Leadership Dialogues at Stockholm+50. For each, sustainable food systems are highlighted as a key arena in which we may drive interventions that benefit human health, planetary health, and livelihoods.

Stockholm +50 comes less than a year after the UN Food Systems Summit, which generated unprecedented awareness on the need to adopt sustainable food systems approaches. The summit led to over 100 countries developing National Pathways for food systems transformation. This event provided a concrete opportunity to continue the amplification of sustainable food systems, and push to integrate them into the UNCCD, UNCBD and UNFCCC Conferences of Parties negotiations and outcomes. Appetites for Change offered space to highlight champion countries, cities, and communities that have implemented critical system-based solutions. With experts, these sessions advanced our understanding of how we may contribute to sustainable food systems that deliver human and planetary prosperity.

OUTCOMES

alt
  1. Raise awareness and gain support on the need to adopt a holistic approach to promote solutions that take into account all dimensions of sustainable development, simultaneously addressing the areas of environment, agriculture, nutrition and health.
  2. Raise awareness and gain support on the need to “bring food systems transformation to the core of the climate, biodiversity and human health agendas, by building on existing mechanisms and commitments” as featured in the key messages issued by the SFS Programme to Stockholm+50.
  3. Raise awareness and gain support on the “fundamental need to drive broad participation, particularly of the most vulnerable and under-represented in the transition process towards sustainable food systems” as featured in the key messages issued by the SFS Programme to Stockholm+50.
  4. Raise awareness and gain support on the need to create synergies between the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit’s follow-up processes, in particular the implementation of the National Pathways, with [the One Planet Network’s Global Strategy on SCP as well as] the Rio conventions.
  5. Stockholm+50 outcomes fully reflect the above points, including suggestions of immediate actions that can be taken by UN Member States and stakeholders.

commitment to action

The OPN SFS Programme will continue to champion a systemic approach to Sustainable Consumption and Production as well as food systems transformation, and advocate for inclusive and participatory governance models. Concretely, this commitment to action focuses on the provision of technical support to facilitate the implementation of a number of UN Food Systems Summit’s (UNFSS) outcomes, particularly  by: promoting a holistic approach towards  sustainable food systems transformation  across relevant multilateral processes in related key areas such as biodiversity, climate change and health;  contributing support to the UNFSS  Coalitions by offering them a space for exchange of experiences and strengthening such a holistic sustainable food systems approach across the coalitions; and supporting a range of countries with the  implementation of their  National Pathways for Food Systems Transformation. This will be supported by action-oriented tools, including those of the extended SFS Programme’s Multi-stakeholder Mechanisms Initiative, which will address the knowledge gap on inclusive food systems governance experiences
