Sustainable Resource Management in Hotels

  • Published on January 30, 2018
The goal is to create a replicable approach for destinations and businesses across the Pacific to monitor, measure, report on and address critical barriers to improving sustainable consumption and production in the tourism industry. Specifically, the project seeks to: • Collect, monitor, and report on a small but practical set of sustainability indicators; • Provide clear motivation and incentive for businesses to improve performance; • Collect baseline data to provide the foundation for making the business case for sustainability; and • Identify risks, challenges and gaps for future interventions.
SPTO is proud of the Sustainable Resource Management in Hotels"" activity which we have begun implementing in Fiji and Samoa. The response from the industry in both countries have been positive and encouraging, confirming the dire need for data to guide the industry in ensuring that the tourism sector is sustainably managed. For a long time, the Pacific has been without a system to assist hotels and accommodation providers with data on its usage of energy, water and other resources, and therefore future planning has not been thorough or properly done. With this activity, the Pacific, starting with Fiji and Samoa, will have a toolkit available to its hotels online which they can use to generate reports on their consumption patterns and which they can also submit to their national governments to assist with the development of pro-sustainable policies for the tourism sector. Similarly, hoteliers themselves can use the report to approach their national governments for incentives, given their efforts to sustainably manage their respective tourism operations. SPTO aims to launch the toolkit by June 2018 (timeframe may change) and we will certainly update the 10YFP Committee on its progress.
