Futouris e.V.

Futouris e.V., founded in 2009 in Germany, aims to preserve the heritage of holiday destinations and develop a sustainable future for the travel industry. Their members from the tourism industry are committed to the improvement of living conditions, the conservation of biodiversity and the protection of the environment and climate. Their goal is to help - in the long-term, comprehensively and sustainably – and develop and implement pilot projects and innovations which enable more responsibility and sustainability in destinations and in the business activity of tourism companies. All measures are planned and implemented in close collaboration with the local people.
Global Tourism Plastics Initiative Signatory
In 2019, Futouris e.V has started its industry project “Plastic-free holidays on Balearic Islands” which is supported by all Futouris members. It aims at reducing the plastic consumption and waste as well as increasing the recycling rate on the Balearic Islands. The organization is working together with local partners as well as with the Balearic government. After the conduction of a pre-study to determine the current status of plastic waste in hotels, Futouris e.V has developed pilot measures to be implemented by and in the participating hotels. In addition, they have created a plastic reduction guidance, supporting tourism businesses to reduce (single-use) plastics by using more sustainable alternatives such as reusable products.

Role in programme(s):

In the framework of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, Futouris e. V commits to:

  • Sharing the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative with their members and partners as well as on social media in order to encourage others to follow and encouraging the hotels that are participating in the project “Plastic-free Balearic Islands” to join the initiative as well.

  • Implementing innovative pilot measures with the participating hotels and local partners in the frame of their project “Plastic-free holidays on Balearic Islands”, offering staff training and customer communication material to support the hotels in reducing plastic waste, monitoring the successes of the implemented measures in order to be able to recommend the most effective measure to the industry, and giving practical tips and advice to support tourism businesses on their plastic reduction journey.

  • Sharing all successes and implemented measures among their members and partners as well as with the wider tourism industry during and after the project ended and using internal as well as external communication channels, i.e. members meetings, newsletter, social media etc.

Futouris member companies are committed to the Paris agreement and the goals of the German government's climate protection plan 2050. In order to achieve these goals, we work with our member companies to reduce tourism emissions in all areas substantially, absolutely and measurably.
Futouris member companies are dedicating their current joint industry project to climate protection. The main aim of this project is to calculate carbon emissions caused by holiday products in a consistent way and communicating them to travel industry staff and customers to enable informed decision making, thus reducing tourism emissions.
