During the Sustainable Consumption Week in Latin America and the Caribbean, an event was organized from September 13 to 17, 2021, whose objective was to promote the exchange of ideas for the region and conscious consumption as a strategy for its economic and social recovery. At the event, conversations were promoted on current production and consumption patterns, and opportunities were looked for to encourage more sustainable lifestyles through education and the provision of information to the consumer.

The Sustainable Consumption Week of Latin America and the Caribbean is a place to create and exchange the advances, opportunities, and challenges of the region to promote sustainable consumption as part of the economic and social recovery. The objective is to generate a dialogue on current consumption patterns in the region and how to gaze at the opportunity of "going back to normal" to promote changes towards sustainable and responsible consumption, promoting sustainable lifestyles, education, and consumer information, including the use of eco-labeling as an information tool for consumers.

This event was organized by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia and the Secretariat for Consumer Protection of Paraguay, with the support of the European Commission and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety in Germany.

The Sustainable Consumption Week in Latin America and the Caribbean was conceived as a platform to create and exchange experiences on advances, opportunities and challenges in advancing sustainable consumption as part of economic and social recovery.

The event integrates strategic actors, civil society and young activists to address relevant aspects of sustainable consumption, such as:

  • How to establish favorable conditions to promote behavior change towards sustainable consumption patterns in the region.
  • The role that public policies, companies and citizens must play.
  • The role of consumer information and tools such as eco-labelling.
  • Sustainable lifestyles and education as drivers of change for climate action.
  • The Sustainable Consumption Week will also host the awards for the Innovation for Sustainable Lifestyles contest, in which university students had the opportunity to present transformative solutions to change consumers' habits and lifestyles.
