Rikolto's "Wanted: Food for the Future"

Seven lessons learned after three years of innovative collaboration on sustainable food

Wanted: Food for the Future is a unique collaboration between the Belgian Province of Flemish Brabant, Rikolto (formerly VECO), Colruyt Group and the University of Leuven together with young people, experts, farmers, etc. to look for ways to feed the growing global population in a sustainable way.

For the past three years, this project has fuelled the debate on sustainable food in Belgium. The partners set up sustainable food chains of three future-proof products from developing countries that have a low environmental impact and, at the same time, offer the farmers producing the products new opportunities. Quinoa from Peru found its way to the Belgian supermarket shelves. Food chains on Indonesian seaweed and Tanzanian pulses are in development. The obstacles, opportunities and questions encountered during this process shaped the debate. The partners and researchers that took part in the project have shared their insights in a handy brochure. It is intended for companies, public authorities, knowledge institutions, NGOs and other organisations to help them face the complex challenges of our society.
