My expertise is centred around the emerging science of One Health / Planetary Health; in particular, how food systems interact with planetary health and, in turn, impact human health and the natural systems on which it depends. One Health also recognises the co-dependency of the health of animals, the environment, the health of all species, and their relevance to human health and the environment. Global food systems are dramatically affecting air quality, water quality, human exposure to infectious diseases, and the habitability of the places where humans live.

A graduate in agriculture, I also have an MSc in International Food Marketing from Newcastle University and a PhD from the University of Reading in Sustainable Food Quality for Health. My thesis developed a conceptual framework for health professionals to train and enable them to lead in the transition to more sustainable diets. Before joining Manchester Met. in 2003, I spent the previous twenty years working in the food sector for several blue-chip food companies. I have international food consultancy experience from both the public and private sectors, with clients ranging from the British Council, the EU, regional food companies and new business start-ups.
