Paradores

Paradores is a public company whose mission aspires to be a tourism policy instrument that projects the image of modernity and quality of Spanish tourism abroad and that contributes to territorial integration, the recovery and maintenance of Historical-Artistic Heritage and the preservation and enjoy natural spaces of our country. It is, at the same time, the engine of the set of actions that stimulate areas with reduced tourist or economic movement.

During 2019-2022 Paradores has achieved the following milestones:
• Rooms and bathrooms 100% free of single-use plastics. The individual bottles have been eliminated and have been replaced by 300-milliliter dispensers. Other accessories are replaced by others made with ecological resin made from wheat straw or by glass containers in the minibars.
• Elimination of straws and plastic cups.
• Elimination of single-use plastic tableware for events and banquets with glass, porcelain, bamboo, etc.
• In addition, all the packaging of the different gastronomic offers has been updated. It is being replaced with the following alternatives: Kraft paper bag for transporting food; recycled food paper for food wrapping; Kraft cardboard boxes and Kraft paper bags for food service and cellulose napkins.

In the framework of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, Paradores commits to:
  • Eliminate from bathrooms plastic packaging by 2025
  • Eliminate from food and drink services plastic items by 2025
  • Eliminate from logistics plastic packaging by 2025
  • Introduce reusable solutions in bathrooms to replace Single-portion or single-serving packaging by 2023
  • Introduce reusable solutions in food and drink services to replace plastic items by 2023
  • Engage the value chain to provide data on recyclability and compostability of plastic packaging to facilitate the move towards 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025
  • Engage with SUPPLIERS to provide data on recyclability and compostability, of plastic packaging
  • Establish procurement criteria on reusability, recyclability, and compostability, more specifically, in their public procurement process, Paradores will introduce criteria to diminish the use of plastic packaging to be reusable or recyclable
  • Take action to increase the amount of recycled content across all plastic packaging and items used by 2025 and will do this through Engagement of SUPPLIERS to provide data on % of recycled content in plastic packaging and items and establishment of procurement criteria on % of recycled content in packaging and items. More specifically, the company will do this by introducing in its public procurement process criteria to incentivize suppliers to meet the goals to which Paradores committed to increase the amount of recycled content.
  • Provide training and means for staff to sort solid waste (especially plastic waste), according to local regulations, sustainability standards, and/or technical guidance from waste management service provider.
  • Engage with other BUSINESS and KEY STAKEHOLDERS to discuss and take action to improve the performance of WASTE SERVICE PROVIDERS (e.g. recycling rates). All of Paradores hotels are certified with the ISO 14001. Therefore, a special environmental management model is applied to segregate waste. In addition, organization is encouraging municipalities to invest and take action in policies of waste management throughout European funds.
  • Publicly report on implementation of commitments above and on annual weight of plastics in operations.
