The Good Life Goals

  • Published on January 15, 2019
One day, back in May of 2018, the global change agency Futerra and leaders working with the 10YFP Sustainable Lifestyles and Education programme gathered at OECD in Paris to discuss solutions for sustainable lifestyle communication in connection to the Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs themselves have guided policy-makers and business leaders in setting large scale strategies in accordance with the Paris Agreement. At the same time, a global movement for achieving sustainable lifestyles is advancing. Using this movement as a catalyst, the working group with participants from SEI, UNEP, WBCSD, UNESCO and Futerra got to work. The idea was to provide simple recommendations for each of the Global Goals as they pertain to lifestyle changes. Members of the Multi-stakeholder Advisory Committee (MAC) for the 10YFP SLE programme contributed with research and expertise. These recommendations or #GoodLifeGoals as they were named are to be communicated through organisations, companies, and governments, local and national. They are easy to understand, relevant and send a message that we all, individually and collectively, can play an important role in defining the future.
Used as a communication and educational tool, the 85 actions in the Good Life Goals can help organisations connect with their customers or employees to increase awareness of the SDGs, promote an internal culture of sustainability and bolster new product/service development to support more sustainable lifestyles. The Good Life Goals can help start an important conversation. The Good Life Goals were formally launched at the United Nations General Assembly 2018 Global Day of Action. Leaders from the 10YFP SLE programme and Futerra held an event during the Global Action Hour on Tuesday 25 September. This sparked interest and an impressive 113 media articles were written over the following months, reaching a potential audience of more than 6,2 million readers. On 6 December an Expert Workshop for Media and Policy-Makers, was arranged by Futerra and UNEP in Paris, How to Make Sustainable Living the New Normal. The workshop objective was to better understand and tap emerging media forms to empower people to make more sustainable choices with the focus on the Good Life Goals. Other forums such as UNEA and actions such as local language translations are in the works.
