Five-fold income expansion for aged women through Cassava peel Recycling for Animal Feed (FINTRAFs)

  • Published on March 26, 2024
Five-fold income expansion for aged women through Cassava peel Recycling for Animal Feed (FINTRAFs), aimed to equip the Adeta Indigenous women who work in the cassava value chain with the necessary machines and skills to increase their productivity and improve their standard of living. Before empowerment, indigenous women peeled cassava by hand, sustained varying degrees of hand injuries from the sharp knives they used to peel cassava. They are then sun-dried the peels and sold them within their community. The US ASSH funded FINTRAFs provided to these Indigenous women represents a significant milestone in NHI's capacity to combat poverty and food insecurity in the Adeta community. The project, titled FINTRAFs is an initiative, benefited at least 500 direct beneficiaries and at least 2,000 indirect beneficiaries, including women, vulnerable children, and youth towards combating food insecurity, poverty, and food waste in disadvantaged communities.

How this initiative contributes to zero waste.
FINTRACS is a zero-waste initiative because it the cassava peels which used to be dumped was reprocessed into feed millets for livestocks; and the solar powered dryer, processor and garri production facilities contributed to the zero-waste nature of this project. In addition, and from community engagement zero waste tolerance and income generation perspective from production wastage to an intervention which efficiently generated a sustainable five-fold income increase for Adeta indigenous women community as employment opportunities are created from the sales of processed cassava peels. Consequently, the Adeta Garri Production Center eliminated but human and natural resources wastage by helping indigenous elderly women improve their socio-economic well-being, which represents human resource circularity, as well as efficient labor market resources allocation. FINTRAFs’ theory of change and logical model on cassava peel recycling would expand the cassava value chain of elderly women's income by five times, and attain 97% cassava peel use optimization. It should be noted that the FINTRAFs project will empower 100 beneficiaries within four weeks of commencement. women per batch weekly. The 500 empowered women would train other women, thereby having a multiplier effect on the Adeta community.

How this initiative contributes to the relevant SDGs associated targets.

Activities
Announcement and sensitization of ASSH grant to Adeta Community of Indigenous Women, thereby, intimating the community about what the project is about, and the outcome of the project to the community as a whole and to them as individuals.
TREF Bundle Lab Renovation: Reworking an existing housing facility to house the machines and beneficiaries during their training and processing sessions. (This will be provided and executed by the host community)
Local fabrication of cassava processing machines: Fabrication and Installation of Machines:
●    Locally fabricated Cassava peeling machine.
●    Locally fabricated pressing machine(to press out the water out of the cassava peel after grating it)
●    Locally fabricated industrial dehydrator (for drying the cassava peel)
●    Dry Milling machine (for milling the dried cassava into powder)
●    Industrial sealing machine.
Installation of machines
Locally Fabricated Industrial Dehydrator
Training the Trainers: This includes training 5 lead beneficiaries on how to make use of the machines and the different processing stages of converting cassava peels into animal feed.
Selection of 500 beneficiaries: This selection will be based on gender, age, address, years of working at the AGPC, number of dependents, and willingness to learn.
Computer documentation of the beneficiaries’ details: Name, Age, Gender, Address, Phone numbers and ward of origin.
Grouping the beneficiaries into batches:  The project will empower 100 beneficiaries within 4 weeks of commencement. 25 women per batch weekly. These 100 beneficiaries within a month would have generated a steady market for their produce which in turn would help to increase their daily income from less than $1 to $5. This means that within 5 months, 500 women would have been economically empowered via TREF bundle.
Batch I Training
Batch 2 Training
Batches 3 – 21 to finalize TREF Bundle strategy to 500 beneficiaries.
Prepare a background paper on the aged women, income expansion and strategic contributions of partnerships to enhance Adeta community on cassava value chains.
Organize a stakeholder workshop to sensitize stakeholders on the role of FINTRAFs and TREF Bundles.
Collaborate with more partners to scale the FINTRAFs.
The beneficiaries cum trainees will be evaluated based on what they have been trained.

Background, Challenges and Objectives
For the Adeta Indigenous women to produce substantial economic returns, reduce environmental pollution, and minimize post-harvest losses by recycling cassava peel into nutritious animal feed to save animals and the environment as climate change worsens in the Adeta community. FINTRAFs set out to contribute to the achievement of the project goals and visions.
NHIs Five-fold income expansion for aged women through Cassava peel Recycling for Animal Feed (FINTRAFs) heartily acknowledges its project stakeholders, notably the direct beneficiaries, community leaders, and the Kwara State agricultural sector authorities for their efforts towards the implementation of its planned activities during the project lifespan,
