Decoding Evaporative Air Coolers

  • Published on January 12, 2022

This report, Decoding Evaporative Air Coolers, is prepared under the umbrella of the ongoing SHEETAL project, which is supported by Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), to facilitate the implementation of India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) recommendations.

The report lays the stepping stones for policymakers to move forward towards the development of MEPS for evaporative air coolers. It nudges thought processes towards standardisation of India’s evaporative air cooler market.

AEEE has developed the 'Decoding Evaporative Air Coolers' report which is aligned with the recommendations of the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) 2019. The report lays the stepping stones for policymakers to move forward towards the development of MEPS for evaporative air coolers. It nudges thought processes towards the standardisation of India’s evaporative air cooler market. The report sheds light on the evaporative air cooler’s technological feasibility and applicability, provides an overview of India’s evaporative air cooler market scenario, and the existing national institutional and regulatory mechanism for improving appliance energy efficiency. The report also draws recommendations for India's evaporative air cooler sector based on the review and comparison of the evaporative air cooler standards adopted nationally and internationally. The report has been prepared under the umbrella of the ongoing SHEETAL project, which is supported by the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), to facilitate the implementation of ICAP recommendations. This report’s objective is in-line with the Consumer Information for Sustainable Consumption & Production Programme (CI-SCP) objective to “support the provision of quality information on goods and services and effective strategies to engage consumers in sustainable consumption” as the report 1) is disseminating knowledge amongst the key actors in this sector about the evaporative air cooler’s technological feasibility and applicability, India’s evaporative air cooler market scenario, and the existing national institutional and regulatory mechanism for improving appliance energy efficiency. The report also draws recommendations for India's evaporative air cooler sector based on the review and comparison of the evaporative air cooler standards adopted nationally and internationally and 2) The report also fosters the narrative of increased access to efficient and sustainable space cooling technologies to achieve thermal comfort by promoting the use of standardised evaporative air coolers. It will also contribute to the wider market adoption and mainstreaming of Non-GWP refrigerant based space cooling technologies in India.
