Trash to Treasure

  • Published on February 14, 2019
We work with ladies in the community of Maun, to create place-mats and coasters from bottle caps. Usually we use the metal bottle caps that are picked up from the local bars. The bottle caps are then covered with African cloth. The aim is to keep the environment clean as well as provide a steady flow of income to the socially disadvantaged women.
The objectives of this initiative are : 1. To bridge the gap between the community , the products produced and the tourism sector 2. Provide a steady income for the disadvantaged ladies in the community 3. Work on keeping the environment clean by using picking up bottle-caps with the hopes that this will spill over to general population to keep the environment clean. The activities carried out here are picking up the bottle-caps and covering them with African print cloth. These are later sold to curio shops within the camps In Botswana for tourists to take home as gifts. The results thus far have been that the women have been to do certain things for themselves that they have been struggling to do due to the fact that they could really afford to. One the ladies has managed to complete a house she was building for herself and children. Some have been able to ensure that their children have all the basic needs met especially focused on education. We are also expecting that people realize that keeping the environment clean is imperative and fit will have a ripple effect in the tourism sector as well as the generations to come. This is one of the impacts we are hoping to see come into play over the next several years.
