Global Search for Sustainable schools in Kyrgyz Republic

The Kyrgyz Republic has become one of 9 countries participating in the Global Search for Sustainable Schools (GSSS) since March 2019. Ths GSSS is a project under the Sustainable Lifestyles and Education (SLE) programme of the One Planet Network. It is funded through the Trust Fund of the Network, administered by UNEP with the contributionfrom the Ministry of the Environment, Japan.
This project is under the Sustainable Lifestyles and Education (SLE) programme, one of the programmes of the 10YFP. It aims to foster the uptake of sustainable lifestyles as the common norm, with the objective of ensuring their positive contribution to addressing global challenges, such as resource efficiency and biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, poverty eradication and social well-being. This will be done through multidisciplinary research and multi-stakeholder cooperation, through the promotion of participative and bottom-up approaches, innovative policies, economic instruments and technologies, awareness-raising, as well as through all forms of education. The SLE programme is co-led by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the Government of Sweden represented by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). A Multi-stakeholder Advisory Committee (MAC) oversees the programme’s coordination and implementation. Further details on the programme can be found at this link. The Kyrgyz Republic has become one of 9 countries participating in the Global Search for Sustainable Schools since March 2019. The global search for sustainable schools aims to help transition to sustainable development schools all over the world. In the Kyrgyz Republic this project is implementing by the Public Association “Institute for Regional Development” under the supervision and coordination of the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic (SAEPF KR). First, according to the Global criteria, national school search and evaluation criteria were developed and approved by IGES. On October 14, the National Search for Sustainable Schools was announced, which was completed on November 30, 2019.In parallel, the Communication Strategy and Action Plan was developed. The Facebook page of the project was created and updated on a social network Facebook and Instagram, the project website was created and updated. Also was created an expert working group of specialists from the Kyrgyz Academy of Education, who analyzed the integration of ESD and SCP issues in school education. They are engaged in the development of a teaching aid for a teacher and a study guidance for a student, which will be tested on the basis of the winning schools. In September, national Kick-off workshop was conducted in Bishkek and Chui oblast. On the basis of the order of the SAEPF KR, a competitive commission was formed (from 09/12/2019 №01-9/321), which hold meetings from December 9 to 11 and chose the winning schools. The minutes of the meeting of the tender commission have been prepared. On December 17, the kick-off seminar “Global Search for Sustainable Schools in the Kyrgyz Republic” was held. The workshop was attended by the leadership of SAEPF KR, Republican children and youth center of ecology, local history and tourism, Kyrgyz Academy of Education, NGOs, school teachers and representatives of the winning schools. Certificates were awarded to the winning schools. The meeting was held with the directors of the winning schools to discuss the work plans and budgets of schools.
