  • Published on January 25, 2022

The main objective was the improvement of electricity infrastructure with new energy efficient lighting system in the production facility of company Karolina d.o.o.

There are three main goals which were achieved with this project. The first goal was improvement of electricity infrastructure with new energy efficient lighting system. The second goal was consolidation of the current lighting system with standardized lighting values according to the standard HRN EN 12464-1 and the third goal was environmental protection (dispositioning harmful substance from lighting sources, reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the production process).

The main activities of company Karolina d.o.o. is production of biscuits, waffles and saltines. At the moment, about seventy products are produced in factory Karolina d.o.o. on a total of 12 production lines. The product range includes several different product groups: biscuits, tea biscuits, filled tea biscuits, waffles, extruded products (salty snack - flips products and sweet products from the breakfast segment), crackers and salty durable pastries.

With this project, 839 existing fluorescent lamps were replaced with new LED lamps and the whole lighting system was consolidated with standardized lighting values according to the standard HRN EN 12464-1 in 5 production halls used for the production and storage of raw materials and final products.

The condition of the existing lighting was almost obsolete in the whole area and the lighting requirements according to the standard HRN EN 12464-1 and the standard HRN EN 12464-2 were not met. The proposal to modernize the lighting was by installing high-efficiency LED lamps.

Newly designed LED lamps were supposed to have lower consumption than existing ones, better light

efficiency and optics adapted to the requirements of the rooms in which they were planned to be used

The project resulted in the reduction of the annual energy consumption of 222.015,28 kWh and cost savings of 27.540 USD per year. In addition to the results of this project, 52,13 tons of CO2 emissions were not released in the atmosphere due to a reduction in electricity consumption.

This project has contributed to the National Development Strategy of the Republic Croatia until 2030, strategic goal 8: Environmental and energy transition to climate-neutrality and to the Energy Development Strategy of the Republic Croatia until 2030.
