Product repairability scoring system (information on the repairability of some consumer products - through a logo)

  • Published on January 2, 2019
Inform consumers (directly on the product) about the repairability of electric and electronic products through a repairability scoring system provided via a simple information (rated label or logo). The general objective is to promote the repair of products instead of their scrapping. The measure targets manufacturers, retailers, consumers and the repair sector. This information measure should also push for a better ecodesign of products for easier repair.
Following the annoncement of this measure, generic repairability criteria (ex: documentation, accessibility to components, dismantability, spare part availibility etc.) have been prepared by ADEME (French environment and energy agency) then worked again with stakholders - taking inspiration from those already developed by a pioneer retailer. Sector stakeholder working groups have been established (smartphones, laptops, washing machines, TV monitors and lawn mowers). The WGs are testing the generic criteria to their products. When the technical works are more advanced and some consensus is found on the criteria and the future logo, the government will prepare an implementation measure. The involvement of stakeholders (industry, NGO, public authorities etc.) is strong and active – that should help to bestow an important legitimacy, credibility and acceptability upon the future logo. Furthermore, synergies are built with similar initiatives at the EU level.
