In 2027, the Secretary of State for tourism of Portugal adopted the Tourism Strategy 2027. The strategy was developed through a participatory process which involved all stakeholders in the country. It contains a vision, priorities and clear economic, social and environmental goals for the sustainable development of tourism in Portugal.

Impact and Results

The Tourism Strategy 2027 has the following goals:
-Economic sustainability: increase the arrivals to the whole territory to 80 million overnights; grow in value and increase the receipts to 26,000 million euros.
-Social sustainability: extend tourism activities throughout the whole year and reduce seasonality; double the number of tourism diploma holders (secondary and post-secondary education); ensure that tourism creates a positive impact for local residents.
-Environmental sustainability: ensure that more than 90% of tourism businesses adopt energy and water efficiency measures and develop responsible waste management measures.
