NEZEH (Nearly Zero Energy Hotel) e-toolkit

  • Published on January 24, 2018
The neZEH e-toolkit, developed within the framework of the nearly Zero Energy Hotels (neZEH) initiative co-funded by the European Commission in the frame of the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme, is a practical tool for hotel owners to help them benchmark their energy consumption in comparison to neZEH levels. Appropriate measures for energy efficiency improvement and renewable energy integration are subsequently recommended in order to turn their properties into nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB).
The e-toolkit is designed to increase the energy efficiency capacity in the accommodation industry and to encourage hotel owners to proceed to energy renovation projects towards zero energy targets. The neZEH e-toolkit is based on the UNWTO Hotel Energy Solutions e-toolkit, co-funded by the Intelligent Energy Programme, The user-friendly e-toolkit solicits answers with a short questionnaire and thereafter provides hoteliers with a report assessing their current energy profile. It shows the hotel’s performance in achieving nearly zero energy levels and provides an indicative set of appropriate renewable energy and energy efficiency measures. Since 2011, the neZEH e-toolkit has engaged more than 20,000 users worldwide and 2,000 hotels in Europe to better understand how to become energy efficient and more competitive. The European Committee of the Regions, in its Opinion "Tourism as a driving force for regional cooperation across the EU" (2017), recommends the use of the two e-toolkits as support to climate friendly projects in the sector.
