The universality of Food makes it a great conversation starter for Sustainable Consumption and Production. Following the 2018 UN High Level Political Forum, the One Planet network adopted the cross-cutting theme of Food for the year.

Produced with the aim of helping audiences formulate personal actions, ‘10 tips to support Sustainable Food Systems’ is the first video in a series. A tool for all of One Planet’s programmes, this video communicates a key message that is in line with our Sustainable Food System programme’s vision: Your relationship with food can transform our food systems!

This video was brought to you by the One Planet network with the financial support of the European Commission and Government of Sweden in collaboration with the One Planet network’s Sustainable Food System Programme (co-led by The Swiss Confederation, Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG), Hivos, the Republic of South Africa, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)).

Non-communicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular ailments cause more deaths than infectious diseases. Believe it or not, you can transform our food systems through your own relationship with food! Here are 10 simple tips to get started:

  2. Eat more plant-based meals *Enjoy more pulses like peas, beans, lentils, and chickpeas!
  3.  Eat local *Check which of your local farmers produce sustainably
  4. Eat seasonal
  5. Buy sustainably produced foods *Learn about practices and labels
  6. Buy or order only what you can finish or save - don’t waste! *You paid for all of it. Don't throw your money in the waste bin!
  7. Avoid excessive packaging
  8. Talk about healthy and sustainable food with your vendors and producers
  9. Farm, grow, plant! *Start an urban garden, school garden or kitchen garden
