New WWF report: Nothing natural about nature’s steep decline

  • Published on November 1, 2018
WWF's Living Planet Report 2018 reveals staggering extent of human impact on planet - and the implications for our food and nutrition.

Humanity and the way we feed, fuel and finance our societies and economies is pushing nature and the services that power and sustain us to the brink, according to WWF’s Living Planet Report 2018. The report presents a sobering picture of the impact of human activity on the world’s wildlife, forests, oceans, rivers and climate, underlining the rapidly closing window for action and the urgent need for the global community to collectively rethink and redefine how we value, protect and restore nature.

All our food relies one way or another on natural systems, including the complex ecological relationships that enable soils to support plant growth - after all, a quarter of all the life on Earth can be found beneath our feet. Furthermore, about 87% of all flowering plant species are pollinated by animals, and crops that are partially pollinated by animals account for 35% of global food production. The report highlights how nutrition, fundamental to our wellbeing, is inextricably interlinked with nature.
