The contribution of the private sector is essential to the success of the Paris agreement. Beyond the necessary advocacy for an ambitious agreement in Paris, businesses have the responsibility to adapt their own business model to a 1.5/2°C climate resilient world. Several companies have engaged in climate change action for years, through ambitious Corporate Social Responsibility policies.
More recently, many companies have publicly pledged to take ambitious climate actions. Despite this engagement of the private sector towards global reduction of carbon emissions, the tourism sector remains largely invisible. The tourism private sector involvement for the success of Paris agreement is vital since it is estimated, that tourism’s resource use, including energy, water, land and food will at least double over the coming four decades.
To support tourism sector activities of Morocco at the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 22) that will take place between 7th and 18th of November 2016 in Marrakesh, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the governments of France and the Kingdom of Morocco are collaborating as parts of the Sustainable Tourism Programme of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP STP) to provide a series of stimulating, sector focused climate webinars.
These webinars will reflect 10YFP STP ambition to promote tools and solutions among decision makers and private sector for greener and more sustainable tourism.
The objectives of this webinar are to:
- To provide an overview of the key provisions of the Paris Agreement and the impact on tourism business operations
- To provide insight on tourism sector mitigation & adaption measures needed for the transition to a low carbon economy and climate resilient destinations
