“Through the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, we are creating a supportive network for businesses and governments to close the loop around plastic.
The Travel Foundation has a long track record of successfully working with hotels and other businesses to reduce their plastic and other waste. This is currently our focus in Cyprus, Mauritius and Saint Lucia, where we are working at both policy and operational level.
The pandemic has put increased pressure on businesses to offer single-use items. Yet even within this new context a smart and circular approach to resource use can, and must, be a priority.”
- Jeremy Sampson, CEO, The Travel Foundation
The Travel Foundation supports companies and the public sector to collaborate, to create a world where tourism provides the greatest benefits for destinations, so that their communities and environments can thrive.
In the framework of the Gobal Tourism Plastics Initiative, the Travel Foundation commits to:
Providing information on the GTPI to relevant businesses and associations as part of their capacity-building process (2020-2021) including awareness-raising activities and encouragement to join the initiative. A review of capacity building events will be done at the end of each year.
Provision of practical toolkits supplemented with training (likely virtual) to support the development and implementation of sector-wide and individual action plans where appropriate. Activities will be delivered across 2020 and 2021.
Reporting and reviewing across projects and related achievements, at the end of each calendar year.
Communicating successes to affiliated organisations and businesses, partners, travelers and key local stakeholders.
