The Committee on Agriculture (COAG) is one of FAO’s Governing Bodies providing overall policy and regulatory guidance on issues relating to agriculture, livestock, food safety, nutrition, rural development and natural resource management.

At its 26th session, which took place from 1 to 5 October 2018, the COAG discussed sustainable food systems. It welcomed FAO’s work in this regard, and acknowledged the need for a more integrated, multi-stakeholder approach to address the complex challenges of sustainable food systems development, taking into account the cultural dimension.

Furthermore, it requested FAO to support governments in adopting a sustainable food system approach, to increase its collaboration with other UN agencies and the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), and to continue its support in strengthening strategic partnerships and platforms, notably the One Planet Sustainable food Systems Programme.

Finally, the COAG requested FAO to take to lead in developing voluntary codes of conduct on the reduction of food losses and waste, in collaboration with relevant actors.
