New Report on Major Challenges and Success Stories

Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) can be a powerful tool for cities dealing with contemporary sustainability challenges such as the degradation of natural capital and ecosystem services, vulnerability to climate change and natural disasters, as well as corresponding health and wellbeing issues. NBS have the potential to boost local economies and create business opportunities.

However, many public authorities still report difficulties in using public procurement to implement NBS projects.

This report provides an overview of the major challenges facing NBS procurers in the EU, along with case studies of success in addressing those barriers across nine European cities. The findings may help other public authorities adapt their procurement processes to procure NBS more effectively.

ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability has written the report on behalf of the European Commission (Directorate-General for Research and Innovation).
