Sustainable Public Procurement Programme

Circular Procurement

Procura+ Circular Procurement Interest Group

The Procura+ Interest Groups on circular procurement brings together participants who wish to collaborate on this common topic of interest.

The purpose of the Interest Group will be to:

  • Share lessons from those with practical experience
  • Provide support to group members to develop tangible circular procurement actions and criteria, mainstream circular procurement at the organisational level
  • Inform the next generation of circular procurement.

The interest group is a unique chance for public procurers to learn from each other in how to support the transition to a circular economy through their procurement.

This group was established with support from Interreg Baltic Sea Region project Circular PP and will be supported in future by the Horizon 2020 project CityLoops.

Why circular procurement?

Circular procurement promotes consideration of the whole life-cycle of goods and services, in order to avoid negative environmental impacts and waste creation, and achieve an overall reduction in the amount of energy and materials consumed. Including circular principles in procurement can help procurers take a more holistic approach to sustainability throughout the procurement cycle - while also achieving potential savings.

What is Procura+?

Initiated and co-ordinated by ICLEI, Procura+ is a network of European public authorities and regions that connect, exchange and act on sustainable and innovation procurement. By affiliating with the UN One Planet Network, the group also plans to share and draw experience from more global regions.

Group activities

The interest group will meet at least twice per year. Practitioners will present lessons from their pilot activities, as well as share and discuss their plans for upcoming procurements they would like to make more circular.

The first meeting took place on 29 May 2020.
