Role in programme(s):
Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism
Niseko Town considers global heating countermeasures of upmost importance and has been taking various initiatives as an Environmental Model City and a SDGs Future City. As climate change accelerates in recent years and continues to threaten the survival of our global society, we may not be able to leave our children with a sustainable world if we do not take action now. In July last year, Niseko officially declared a climate emergency for the town and pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero before 2050 by adopting a two-pronged approach that involves the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and the adaptation of society to the effects of climate change. We pursue to halve tourism emissions over the next 10 years and achieve net zero emissions before 2050 in accordance with the aims of the Glasgow Declaration. We are confident in our ability to meet these promises and realize these goals.
