Sustainable Public Procurement - is a process whereby public organizations meet their needs for goods, services, works and utilities in a way that achieves value for money on a whole life cycle basis in terms of generating benefits not only to the organization, but also to society and the economy, whilst significantly reducing negative impacts on the environment

This webinar was organized in the framework of the Sustainable Public Procurement programme of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP on SPP). It was hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, Cities and Lifestyles Unit and co-organized with the United Nations Development Programme.

Informal Interagency Task Team on Sustainable Procurement in the Health Sector - SPHS

The UN informal Interagency Task Team on Sustainable Procurement in the Health Sector (SPHS) was established in May 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is currently hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Istanbul Regional Hub. It brings together seven UN agencies and three multilateral health financing institutions operating in the global health aid market. Our annual cumulative purchasing power is estimated to be $5 billion, which represents a sizable portion of some segments of the global pharmaceutical and other health products markets.

The SPHS acts as a driver for transformational change towards more sustainable health systems and inclusive green and social economies. It facilitates and coordinates the introduction of sustainable procurement and production practices in the global health sector. It actively works in the field of sustainable procurement both within the United Nations system and at a governmental level, and facilitates awareness-raising and capacity building as well as develop guidance on sustainable procurement.

Objectives: 

• To facilitate and coordinate the introduction of green procurement in the health sector among the members
• To leverage the normative mandate and joint procurement volumes of member agencies to influence the global health aid market and beyond towards greener health systems and green economies
