EPA Sustainable Materials Management Web Academy

  • Published on January 31, 2022

The Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Web Academy series is a free resource hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide training and networking opportunities for anyone interested in learning more about SMM principles from practitioners and experts in the field.

The SMM Web Academy series hosts monthly webinars that focus on educating about and improving all types of sustainable materials management programs. Sustainable materials management is a systemic approach to using and reusing materials more productively over their entire life cycles and is directly related to sustainable consumption.

The 60- to 90-minute webinars are free to attend. EPA engages experts from around the country to present on how to create and make SMM programs successful. The SMM Web Academy was established in 2008 and webinars typically draw a national audience of anywhere from 400 to over 1,000 attendees.

Webinars have covered topics including waste prevention, material characterization and measurement, value of repair, economic impacts of recycling, reducing contamination in residential recycling, recycling for lithium-ion batteries and electronic waste, recycling contracts, procurement, disaster debris management, construction and demolition debris, anaerobic digestion, and various tools, reports, and analyses that support sustainable materials management.

Speakers have included representatives from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), U.S. Green Building Council, Natural Resources Defense Council, The Recycling Partnership, Consumer Technology Association, National Waste & Recycling Association, California Association of Recycling Market Development Zones, U.S. Conference of Mayors, U.S. Department of Transportation, Argonne National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, state agencies, private sector companies, and academia.
