Do pasto ao prato: o que você coloca na sua mesa? (From pasture to plate: what do you put on your table?)

Have you ever stopped to reflect on what food you put on your table? Where does it come from, does it impact biodiversity, is it produced under degrading working conditions? This is the purpose of the application "From pasto to plate", an initiative that emerged from academic research and aims to increase transparency in the meat chain and support conscious consumption in Brazil.

Dr. Vivian Ribeiro, a research biologist at the Stockholm Environment Institute in Sweden and co-creator of the “From pasture to plate” presents the app in a session organized by Bocaina Biologia da ConservaçãoProf. Ricardo Solar, the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Ecology, Conservation and Management of Wildlife at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, whose line of research is to understand the main causes and consequences of the dynamics and maintenance of the biodiversity in environments modified by anthropic activity takes also part in the dialogue.

"Do pasto ao prato" app increases transparency in the meat supply chain, from the pastures to the consumer.

Food retailers in Brazil provide little or no information on where the meat they sell comes from, creating a barrier for customers who want to support progress towards sustainable and ethical farming. Some companies in Brazil’s livestock sector are linked to impacts including deforestation, human rights abuses, and poor animal welfare and hygiene standards.

The app helps shoppers make informed choices – they can scan multiple products, compare their scores on the issues that matter to them, and then vote with their wallet. Besides, the app will help Trase,a data-driven transparency initiative, to shine a light onto the links between domestic meat consumption in Brazil and sustainability impacts.
