Communicating Food Sustainability to Consumers

The objectives of the webinar are:

  1. Discuss study findings and recommendations of Communicating Food Sustainability to Consumers and how to best apply them.
  2. Identify the main challenges ahead and possible solutions to address them.

Shifting demand for food towards more sustainable consumption is increasingly recognised as necessary to address the climate and biodiversity crises. Influencing consumer choices is an essential part of strategies to build sustainable food systems. To address this topic, the webinar “Communicating Food Sustainability to Consumers” was organized on May 24th and 25th for audiences from Asian/ Pacific and Africa/Americas/Europe.

This webinar is based on the research project conducted together by UNEP, WWF and GlobeScan to improve the understanding of how the provision of sustainability information can influence consumers’ food choices. The session was organized within the framework of the One Planet network Consumer Information Programme. The study findings on food sustainability communication, including the recommendations and how best to apply them were explored during the webinar, and the main challenges ahead and possible solutions to address them had also been discussed. Panellists from government, private sector, civil society, and consumer association shared their perspectives on the big trends, bold opportunities and best practices of shifting consumption.
