Outdoors and nature bring great value to both individuals and society as a whole. A Swedish project carried by the Swedish Association for Outdoor Organizations (Svenskt Friluftsliv) and supported by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, ”Year of Outdoor recreation 2021” (Friluftslivets år 2021 - Luften är fri), aims to significantly increase Swedish population’s interest in outdoor recreations and knowledge of nature. The project’s purpose is to get more people to understand the value of outdoor life and try it. Increased cooperation between outdoor life actors is also desired for the future. The ultimate goal is to get up to 10 % more local people to enjoy doing activities outdoors.

Outdoors and nature bring great value to both individuals and society as a whole. A Swedish project ”Year of Outdoor recreation 2021” (Friluftslivets år 2021 - Luften är fri) aims to significantly increase Swedish population’s interest in outdoor recreation and knowledge of nature. The project’s purpose is to get more people to understand the value of outdoor life and explore it. Increased cooperation between outdoor life actors is also desired in the future. The ultimate goal is to get up to 10 % more local people to enjoy doing more activities outdoors.

Through the project, Swedish Environmental Protection Agency desires to highlight the importance of nature and the rights of public access. In Sweden, the right to public access is guaranteed as long as nature is not being disturbed or destroyed. Increasing interest in outdoors also requires increased public understanding surrounding the proper behavior that must be applied when enjoying shared natural spaces.

In the long run, the project is hoped to increased public debates about outdoor life, improved public health, and higher levels of tourism in the country. ”Year of Outdoor recreation 2021” is carried out under various themes that change on a monthly basis. These themes include activities such as eating and sleeping outside that familiarize the population with the variety of activities that can be carried out in the nature.

This project brings together about 150 organizations and the public. The progress of the project can be seen on Instagram account @luftenarfri.nu or by joining the Facebook group called ”Luften är fri”. After the project is over, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency will follow up and evaluate the results.

Year of Outdoor recreation 2021 can connect people with nature. Promoting responsible use of public outdoor spaces can increase public’s understanding of the well-being of the environment and the importance of it. Responsible and diverse use of natural resources and spaces can also bring increased jobs and economic growth.
