Sustainable Buildings and Construction programme: priority areas for 2019-2022
Affordable and resilient building practices, and circular built environment have been identified by the Multistakeholder Advisory Committee (MAC) of the Sustainable Buildings and Construction programme as two priority areas of focus for the period 2019-2022.
The approach to scale up action aims to strengthen the alignment of the SBC programme with the network’s One Plan for One Planet strategy
The One Planet Sustainable Buildings and Construction Workplan for 2019-2022
Buildings and their environments play an essential role for human health, safety and comfort, and, the built environment represents an important share of national wealth. However, current mainstream practices in buildings and construction have major impacts on the environment because of their intense resource use and significant generation of waste and emissions. By introducing sustainable buildings and construction practices, the sector can play an im- portant role in improving the environment and yield important social and economic benefits.
Established in 2015, the Sustainable Buildings and Construction Programme (SBC) contributes to the One Plan for One Planet by accelerating the shift towards sustainable consumption and production (SDG 12) in the buildings and con- struction sector. The SBC programme provides an excellent platform to monitor progress towards SDG 12 together with the five other One Planet network programmes Sustainable Public Procurement, Sustainable Tourism, Sustainable Lifestyles and Education, Sustainable food systems and Consumer Information.
The overall aim of the SBC programme is to achieve a situation, by 2030, where “all stakeholders involved in the plan- ning, commissioning, design, construction, use, management and deconstruction of buildings and their environments have a common understanding of sustainable built environments1 and the knowledge, resources and incentives required to create, maintain and use them.”
To this end, the SBC programme established a network of SBC experts representing key stakeholders engaged in the sustainable buildings and construction sector with a view to raise awareness and share knowledge and information on SBC, and, stimulate cooperation between SBC experts and organizations for the development of practical tools, policy guidance and collaborative projects for SBC implementation in countries.
