Fourteen cities have committed to the C40 Good Food Cities Declaration in order to promote and preserve the health of citizens and the planet. The leadership shown by these cities to advance towards more sustainable food systems is very encouraging, particularly as they include specific, measurable targets rather than just vague aspirations.

The commitment comprises cutting 60% of the carbon emissions in the food sector including by limiting animal protein consumption in public food procurement; increases in local and regional food production; and minimizing plastic packaging and halving food waste by 2030 compared to 2015 waste levels.

With current emissions from food production set to increase by 40% by 2050 according to current trajectories, it is these types of targets that can bring about real changes to food production and eating habits.

Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau also presented the Clean Air Cities Declaration, a commitment to reduce air pollution, an issue to which the food sector contributes greatly through the distribution of goods and inefficient cooking methods, which emphasizes the need for a food systems approach.
