Awareness-raising to the technical concept of the Nubian Vault, as a sustainable and low-carbon solution

  • Published on January 12, 2018
A Roof – To kick-start the Nubian Vault market in West Africa in order to allow the construction of adapted low-carbon housing and the on-site training of skilled NV masons A Nubian Vault construction uses local skills and labour and renewable materials (earth, rocks, water, etc.) for sustainable low cost homes and other buildings. The activities are implemented by AVN's local teams and their partners. They will set up awareness-raising and advocacy campaigns for the three target groups: (a) rural and semi-rural populations (b) urban populations, interested in the benefits brought by the NV (passive energy efficiency, possibility to add on a storey with no additional cost, use of the terraced roof, reduction of urban sprawl), and (c) institutional and development actors for community buildings. This awareness and advocacy campaign will create a demand for NV constructions that AVN will accompany, in particular in the relation between masons and their clients. AVN sends a qualified mason to a village to agree with the client on means and needs for the desired construction, as well as to initiate the training of local apprentices on the construction-site itself. The NV construction technique is passed on by qualified and independent masons to their apprentices, in a form of on-site compagnonnage. The first Nubian Vaults that are built have a significant demonstration effect in terms of promoting AVN's approach as well as the masons themselves. Result 1.1: Rural and urban populations are sensitised to/have better awareness of the Nubian Vault concept and have access to durable, ecological, economical and low-carbon housing. AVN follows a real popularisation methodology: its objective is to create a network of regional teams (AVN and collaborating partners) in order to progressively cover the relevant areas of the 5 countries. This market "kick-starting" method is implemented in rural and urban zones, for a clientele stemming from a mainly informal economy. In the long term, AVN's ambition is to retreat from the zones in which the market has been sufficiently densified. Result 1.2: Political and development actors are sensitised to the NV concept in order to create a demand for NV buildings, allowing the construction of institutional and community buildings that are durable, ecological, economical and low-carbon. Today, nearly no construction proposals for human habitat are adapted to social and economic local realities, nor to the issues of comfort, sustainability and the consequences of climate change. Construction project owners must therefore be sensitised, so that they may adopt new construction practices through community constructions, taking into account their pre-existing needs. These owners, coming from a formal economy standpoint, have the essential task to impulse the implication of artisans, businesses and other actors of the appropriate housing sector (architects, control offices, etc.) and to lay the bases for the institutionalisation of this sector (by the construction of replicable examples). AVN accompanies this emerging formal market by supporting the relationship between construction owners and artisans and businesses, and through construction management support actions.
For the first 15 years, AVN focused on awareness raising to create a demand for Nubian Vault buildings. This method has proven its worth with a 32% average annual growth rate in the number of new NV projects, and now the demand for Nubian Vault building is superior to the number of masons trained (AVN is now focusing on strengthening the training of NV masons) Since 2000, AVN has redoubled its propagation centres (regions and pilot villages), aiming at continual and widespread kickstarting of NV markets, with the following results: - 5 countries of deployment - 15 AVN regional and national offices - 2,500 completed construction sites for 89,000 m2 - 28,000 end-user beneficiaries living or working in a NV - 830 localities with at least 1 NV building Results 2015-2016 - 152 active pilot villages in 2015-2017 with awareness raising activities - 76% of projects are due to awareness raising in the pilot villages; the kickstarting method remains the base of the NV market (representing 94% in Mali) - A 55% growth rate in the number of projects begun in the pilot villages this season, with 330 completed - 33 projects for community purposes ( 6%) to be used by the public, representing 2,200 m² of surface area constructed, including: o 5 educational buildings including 3 classrooms meeting national standards o 4 health care centres including 1 maternity clinic o 7 buildings used for religious purposes o 7 buildings used as offices including 3 regional o Maison des Yvelines in Senegal, a remarkable complex consisting of 20 NVs over 370 m² Involvement of 5 formal companies - 15 projects to be used for production purposes: mainly small family-owned henhouses, onion barn and production unit for Misola flour " A house is a necessity, but a Nubian Vault is better in the Sahel. It's very adapted to climatic conditions, it resists the hot dry winds that blow, it's far better." Siléye Sall, village's chief, Diakré, Mauritania "When we met AVN's team the first time, I couldn't believe it. I thought it wasn't possible to build a house without cement or iron, but only earth. Today, I'm the proudest person living here: at my age, I continue to fast quietly in my room, no matter the heat outside." Fatimata Diop, elder of the village, Diakré, Mauritania "The Nubian Vault house is a good house. If you've built that house, you don't need any more wood, no more metal sheets, nothing. When it rains, it isn't like metal sheets. When it rains, if you're sleeping even, you go out in the morning, you see the water in the courtyard, you didn't even know there was rain in the night. Tin roofs make a lot of noise, you can't even sleep" Ebou Kankou, Nubian Vault client since 2006, Boromo, Burkina Faso "The Nubian Vault is good for one's health, you think there is air-conditioning in the room, it's cooler". René Ndong and Brigitte Phiaw, Nubian Vault clients since 2014, Ngueye Gueye, Senegal
