Transforming Tourism for Climate Action

The launch of the report "Transport-related CO2 emissions from the tourism sector - Modelling Results" at COP25 in Madrid, Spain (December 2019) marks the start of a programme of work aiming at developing actionable policy recommendations to scale up mitigation and adaptation in the tourism sector.
According to the UNWTO/ITF report on “Transport-related CO2 emissions of the tourism sector – Modelling Results”, under the current ambition scenario, a total of 1,998 million tonnes of transport-related CO2 will be attributable to tourism by 2030, representing an increase of 25% over 2016. Tourism has to determine its own high-ambition scenario, beyond transport; a scenario where tourism would transform towards low emission and highly efficient operations. The programme expects to develop a set of actionable policy recommendations to scale up mitigation and adaptation in the tourism sector and to define a "high ambition scenario" for tourism in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
