"Introduction: Circular approaches have been a significant part of the EU landscape since the last decade. However, the rest of the world still needs to catch up with circularity principles and underpinnings; particularly, the developing world. Circular economy practices are expected to increase investment opportunities as it also provides an underlying economic rationale to traverse down this path. From a sustainability perspective, circular practices have direct environmental impact as it supports the reuse and repurposing of materials already being used by closing loops rather than reusing virgin materials. Understanding circularity approaches in different parts of the world may provide opportunities for cross learning and improved practices. Methods: This paper presents a snapshot of the state of play for circularity in the built environment in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Australia, against the backdrop of the more advanced work undertaken in the EU. Secondary literature and primary observations are used for drawing down successful cases of application to understand how circular practices may continue to be improved over time. Results: Indigenous practices of building, both in terms of technology and use of materials in the context of circularity needs to be recognised as a valid approach as it supports retention of cultural values; yet, puts less imposition on globally used materials such as steel, concrete and glass. It creates jobs and supports local economies. It also supports the use of bioclimate responses to design and construction, retaining local know-how. Conclusions: Recognition of indigenous practices are critical in the emerging economies of the world to support fast tracking transitions to a circular economy by embedding and recognising culturally ingrained practices. Approaches to support transitions to reach goals of sustainable development places responsibilities on all stakeholders to collaborate to work effectively to reach these goals."
