Smart City Business Forum

The Viable Cities’ Finance project is co-hosting an international workshop-based conference that will bring cities, innovators, investors and other high-profile actors together to discuss specific strategies for reaching urban climate neutrality. The workshops will focus on innovative technologies that can move the needle towards the cities’ climate goals for 2030.

With the ambition of accelerating the drive towards climate neutrality and laying the foundation needed to scale climate-positive innovations in cities, the Nordic delegation to the Smart City Expo World Congress is partnering with the Dutch, Spanish and German delegations to host the Smart City Business Forum the day before the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona on 16–18 November 2021. The world’s largest meet-up of cities, investors, and innovative smart city companies.

The forum will engage key international actors from cities, investment, innovation and infrastructure in dynamic action-oriented workshops to collaboratively identify obstacles and solutions on the road to climate neutral cities.​ The focus will be on innovative technologies, their climate impact potential and financing needs in the following areas:

  • mobility
  • buildings and energy
  • circularity
  • digital infrastructure.

Preliminary agenda

Part 1: The case for climate neutral cities by 2030 (panel discussion)

The introduction to the event will be held by a panel of high-profile speakers who will discuss whether it is possible to reach climate neutrality by 2030 and what would be required to do it. The discussion will address existing challenges and opportunities with a specific focus on funding gaps.

Part 2: The climate case: impact potential of existing solutions and innovation (workshop breakouts)

These workshops will focus on the potential of specific solutions and their climate impact. The workshops will be held in smaller groups and will address in depth the issues at hand within the themes of:

  • mobility
  • buildings and energy
  • circularity (including sharing economy perspectives)
  • digital Infrastructure.

Part 3: The business case: needs and opportunities (workshop breakouts)

These workshops will focus on the financial potential of specific solutions and what would be needed for upscaling in terms of financing, consortia and PPP. The workshops will be held in smaller groups and will address in depth the issues at hand within the themes of:

  • mobility
  • buildings and energy
  • circularity (including sharing economy perspectives)
  • digital Infrastructure.

Part 4: Let’s collaborate

The fourth part of the day will focus on making connections among the actors. Different activities aimed at improving the knowledge of companies, investors and cities, will be held in a more social setting.
