COP26 - Catalyzing our Net Zero Future
Watch Dr. Vanessa Timmer’s presentation at the COP26 civil society forum about how people can take action locally to bring us closer to meeting our climate targets. During the speech, Dr. Timmer showcases work from One Planet Saanich and OneEarth’s 7 Action Packs for Lighter Living in BC. Find the speech here at Catalysing our Net Zero Future: working with people to take action on climate change | #COP26 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uhpQquqU4g.
In the presentation, Dr. Timmer launches OneEarth’s neighbourhood guide, with its 7 action packs full of fun and inspiring actions that neighbours can take to have the highest impact to advance lighter living. It can be downloaded here. The guide is based on the latest science and research on our local footprints in Southwest BC.
Dr. Timmer spoke about the work OneEarth is doing on Vancouver Island. One Planet Saanich engages schools, businesses and community groups to create their own One Planet Action Plans. They use a common language to talk about sustainability: Bioregional UK’s One Planet Living framework. At the framework’s core are 10 sustainability principles including health and happiness, sustainable food and zero carbon energy. Each plan drives down the carbon and ecological footprint of the region as they are based on priorities identified in the region’s carbon and ecological footprint (EF) analysis - based on numbers from BCIT’s Centre for Ecocities. Project lead OneEarth supports these Saanich-based businesses, schools and community groups to further develop, implement and evaluate their action plans - and enhance their ability to collaborate. The cohort includes high schools, a college, a church, the large shopping mall, a local farm, development projects, a social enterprise, and an electric vehicle company. Saanich is part of a network of towns and cities across the globe that are using One Planet Living to drive collaborative action on the climate and ecological emergency. You can learn more here.
Dr. Timmer also shares details about the Beacon for Sustainable Living, an initiative supporting those leading the way on sustainable living. It is jointly led by OneEarth and the Hot or Cool Institute in partnership with expert communicators. Through the Beacon, the partners shine a light on fresh, bold solutions that match the scale and pace needed to reach 1.5 degree, one-planet living. This includes overlooked solutions including cities, imagining futures, rethinking 'reduce' and taking advantage of life transitions for enabling sustainable living.
