The report enhances awareness on how to better communicate sustainable lifestyles in a broad spectrum of contexts.
This report sets out a four step strategy roadmap for fostering and communicating sustainable lifestyles, illustrated by 16 initiatives and campaigns from around the world. The report details eight operating principles and tips on how to apply them, such as taking advantage of life stages and transitions as well as tapping the power of collective action. The ultimate goal is to create tangible changes in the way people live their daily lives. This full report includes concluding reflections; details on the principles; a workshop summary; and suggested additional resources. In preparation for the development of a global Sustainable Lifestyles communications strategy, this report was researched and created in collaboration with renowned think tanks and advisers in sustainable consumption and production to provide a baseline analysis on existing lifestyles communications efforts. The report recognizes that it is not necessary, and is even not preferable, to rebuild the wheel and start from scratch in communication efforts. The analysis of previous campaigns includes commentary on the successes and failures of each and how new efforts can be more effective by building off of pieces and lessons learned from previous work. When planning to build a communication strategy, or in general when starting efforts, researching and analyzing previous efforts that had similar objectives, methods, or audiences is invaluable. This report informs these analyses.
