Sustainable Rice Platform

  • Published on January 18, 2019
The Sustainable Rice Platform is a multi-stakeholder initiative led by UN Environment, International Rice Research Institute and GIZ to promote resource efficiency and sustainability both on-farm and throughout rice value chains.
The SRP offers the global rice supply chain a proven set of instruments to facilitate wide-scale adoption of sustainable best practices. Our goal is to encourage 1 million rice smallholders to adopt climate-smart, sustainable best practice in rice production, while enhancing smallholder livelihoods and protecting the environment through an alliance that drives innovation and creates shared value. SRP Standard for Sustainable Rice Cultivation v 2.0 SRP Performance Indicators for Sustainable Rice Cultivation v 2.0 SRP Assurance Framework SRP Training Programme The SRP launched the world's first voluntary sustainability standard for rice in 2015 to promote wide-scale adoption of climate-smart, sustainable best practice in rice production. Since its launch, the SRP Standard for Sustainable Rice Cultivation has been implemented in over 20 countries. Pilot field implementation of the SRP Standard in 2016-17 was evaluated by IRRI, and revealed examples of real benefits to rice farmers and the environment, such as: 20% savings in water; 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions; and 10% increase in farmer's incomes.
