Self-Sustaining Aquarium

  • Published on September 30, 2022

The self-sustaining aquarium is designed to contain the control equipment underlying biomes - air, water, electricity and food. The QO Amsterdam hotel implements the initiative fish waste providing an organic food source for the plants whilst the plants purify the water for the fish.

The QO hotel has a self-sustaining aquarium that grows fish for food, whose waste provides an organic fertilizer for vegetables in the hotel's greenhouse while the plants purify water needed by the fish. Furthermore, fishing nets sourced locally are advantageous to recycle as a carpet. The QO can be a prominent organization in approaching the circular economy sector since 33% of the concrete in QO's buildings is recovered from demolished skyscrapers.
