In this video, Ms. Ilana Seid, permanent Representative of the Republic of Palau to the United Nations, presents Palau's intervention on sustainable tourism in the blue economy to the One Ocean Summit 2022.

Ms. Ilana Seid, permanent Representative of the Republic of Palau to the United Nations, introduces Palau’s strategy related to management of potential negative externalities of the tourism industry, which includes a change in their immigration laws to include a mandatory environmental pledge for visitors of the Small Island Developing State.

Ms. Seid also highlights the development of green, land-based tourism and food systems to relieve pressures on blue, ocean-based tourism and to make it more sustainable.

Additionally, Palau has upcoming initiatives to eliminate and ban single-use plastics; work that had previously been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and is developing a tourism carbon calculator, enabling tourists to offset their carbon footprint.

In addition to calling for other tourism actors to collaborate with the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme, Ms. Seid also provides more details on the upcoming "Our Ocean Conference” that will be taking place in Palau on April 13-14, 2022.
