National Green Business Certification Programme - Jamaica
The National Green Business (NGB) Certification Programme of Jamaica is designed to help businesses to become aware, learn and implement best practices in the area of environmental stewardship in an effort to sustain our natural resources. This voluntary program gives businesses an opportunity to promote an environmentally friendly approach to the core elements of their operations.
The major objective of the NGB Certification Programme is to recognize, certify, and promote businesses in Jamaica which have taken steps towards improving the local environment and quality of life. The specific aims of the programme are to:
1. distinguish small and medium and large scale businesses that take relevant steps to protect, preserve and sustain the environment.
2. highlight businesses that strive to operate in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
Nine sectors are eligible for acquiring NGB Certification. These include: Dry Cleaning Services,Health Care Facilities,Printing Services,Supermarkets,Hospitality Sector,Restaurants,Power Generation,Offices and Petroleum Service Stations
Checklists were developed specifically for each sector to audit the facilities and the implemented initiatives and grant the reward based on the level of certification.
A proposal as been written for The National Environment & PLanning Agency to administer the National Green Business Certification Programme as a project in which funding will be sought from the Tourism Enhancement Fund. The project would have its own autonomy independent of the mandate and regulatory role of the Agency. The Agency hopes to launch the programme in 2015-2016 financial year. In light of this fact, no achievements have yet been realised.
