National Ecolabelling Awarding Scheme for hotel and campsite accommodation services

Establishment of a National Ecolabelling Awarding Scheme, namely “Environmentally Friendly”, by the Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection of the Republic of Croatia. The focus of the Awarding Scheme is on hotel and campsite accommodation services.
- Establishment of a National Ecolabelling Awarding Scheme for hotel accommodation and campsite services. This includes drafting of specific environmental criteria for service groups. The Ecolabel Certificate “Environmentally Friendly” awarded to a hotel or a campsite gives a sign of its environmental excellence proving that it is making efforts in reducing its environmental impact in its operational activities. - Establishment of relevant certification, Type I environmental standard ISO 14020 (Environmental labels and declarations). - Reduction of the ecological footprint of hotel or campsite services through the whole life cycle. - Encouragement of companies in the tourism sector to do more for environmental protection and sustainable development than it is prescribed and required by the national law. - Promotion of visibility to the companies that implement high environmental standards in their management. - Following the interest of the associations in the tourism sector, Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection of the Republic of Croatia started a process of establishment of national ecolabelling awarding scheme for hotel and campsite accommodation services. It started with the development of specific criteria for two groups of services: for hotel accommodation and for accommodation in camps. - In the process of defining and creating these new criteria a wide range of government bodies, expert NGOs, tourism companies and other interested stakeholders were involved and consulted. In addition to that, two workshops were organized with experts from tourism sector in order to get useful comments and proposals on the draft criteria. - The final criteria were developed by the authorized professional institution, and after a positive opinion of the Commission for the award of the Environmental Label, criteria were adopted in 2010 by the Ministry for a period of two years (probationary period). - The process of criteria revision finished in August 2013 and new criteria were established for the period of validity up to five years. - National ecolabelling awarding scheme “Environmentally Friendly” for hotel accommodation services and for campsite services has been established: 10 hotels and 5 campsites passed verification process and proved their compliance with specific criteria. They got certificates for the two year period, for the first time application. - Certificated companies promote environmental and social responsible business in their hotels or campsites. - Reduced environmental impact concerning energy and water consumption, reduction of waste generation, encouraging the use of renewable resources and less hazardous substances. - Awarding activities continue in accordance to the established awarding scheme.
