Índice del Progreso Social del Turismo
To measure the impact of tourism with regards to social progress generated in tourism destinations with a view to improvinig the quality of life of the local population.
The index is applied to ten destinations on an annual basis since 2017: Fortuna, Papagayo, Tamarindo, Santa Teresa, Monteverde, Drake, Tortuguero, Puerto Viejo, San Gerardo, Manuel Antonio. The results of 2019 monitoring exercise are attached. The Social Progress Index is the first comprehensive model to measure human development that does not include the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or other economic variables, But it complements them. In its design, the IPS is governed by four basic principles: it only considers social and environmental indicators; outcome indicators and not of efforts; relevant indicators for the context; and indicators that may be the objective of public policies or social interventions
