Food for Us: Trial of a mobile phone application to trade on-farm surplus food in South Africa

  • Published on January 16, 2019
The main goals of the app component of the Food for Us project was to develop and trial an app to trade on-farm surplus food in two regions of South Africa; and to develop a proof of concept to scale up and expand its uptake in South Africa.
We are proud of have trialed an app with communities that are often technically illiterate, and through the exercise identified passionate community intermediaries who saw value in using the app and garnering uptake of users in their community. Whilst it took longer than anticipated to develop and stabilise the app, those who use the app mentioned how it had opened up their immediate food network, and access to market. The concept of the app is widely held as good example of providing access to nutritious surplus food in a country where poor nutrition and food insecurity is a significant issue. Both government and retailers are interest in pursuing the use of the app.
