The EPEAT-New York State Case Study
The NYS EPEAT Case study reflects efforts to purchase EPEAT-registered products. Users of NYS centralized contracts purchase upwards of 200,000 computers and displays each year. These electronics are essential in providing services to the state's 19.8 million residents. However, for all the efficiencies and benefits created through IT, these electronics also carry significant impact on human and environmental health globally. Since 2008, New York State (NYS) has been working to reduce these impacts through the procurement of EPEAT-registered IT products. The case study highlighted the benefits of using EPEAT, and factors that allowed EPEAT's ultimate adoption such as: Leadership, cost considerations, market research, and tracking capabilities.
New York States' successful use of EPEAT was the result of forward thinking leadership and Executive Orders that make sustainability a priority. Its successful implementation was the result of NYS' procurement system and EPEAT resources that helped NYS to conduct effective market research, draft thoughtful sustainable specifications, and to ascertain the benefits of using EPEAT. Use of EPEAT resulted in lifetime benefits including the following for NYS: • Reductions in energy usage of 857M kWh • Reductions in primary materials of 233K metric tons • Reductions in ghg emissions of 113K metric tons • Reductions in Hazardous Waste of 1,592 metric tons • Reductions in solid waste of 6,669 tons. • Cost savings of $8.7M
