The 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP)

  • Published on October 26, 2016
The realization that a global shift towards SCP would require the committment of diverse actors across regions and across sectors spurred Heads of State at Rio+20 to adopt the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP).
At the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development, Heads of State converged around the idea that fundamental changes in our production and consumption patterns are indispendsable to achieving long-term sustainable development. Moving towards Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) patterns is a far greater task than any one government, business, or any other organization can hope to achieve. The realization that a global shift towards SCP would require the committment of diverse actors across regions and across sectors spurred Heads of State at Rio+20 to adopt the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP). The 10YFP supports capacity building, and facilitates access to technical and financial assistance for developing countries for this shift. It aims at developing, replicating and scaling up SCP and resource efficiency initiatives, at national and regional levels, decoupling environmental degradation and resource use from economic growth, and thus increasing the net contribution of economic activities to poverty eradication and social development. The framework is meant to encourage innovation and cooperation among all stakeholders.
