Together It’s Possible: Phasing Out Food And Plastic Waste In The Hospitality Sector

  • Published on September 10, 2019
Everyone on Earth is affected by the impacts of food and plastic waste. Join our conversation on leaving no one behind in the collective journey towards SDG12 and more sustainable consumption and production patterns. With a focus on the hospitality sector, this discussion will present practical initiatives and strategies from those leading on implementation of SDG 12 through the One Planet network. Real people, real solutions, One Planet.
Together it’s possible: Phasing out Food and Plastic Waste in the Hospitality Sector: Joint event of UN One Planet Network Consumer Information, Sustainable Food Systems, Sustainable Lifestyle and Education Programme and WWF Date: 27. 09. 2019, 9:00 – 11:30 Venue: Scandinavia House Please register for your free place: https://bit.ly/2lQJd73 The event will showcase the One Planet network as the implementation mechanism for SDG 12 and present some strategies, approaches and cases of how to reduce food waste and single-use plastics in the hospitality sector (hotel, restaurants). The event will envision success. To be successful we need to work jointly together: provide information for consumers, communicate best practice and offer support through trainings and implementation. The way we produce and consume is at the nexus of the greatest challenges of our time: climate change, biodiversity loss, and healthily and amply feeding a growing population. These issues are irredeemably interlinked. We need to connect climate, food, people and nature and demonstrate the urgency for transformation of the current food system, supporting sustainable consumption and production methods, including halting of land conversion and deforestation and deterring unnecessary plastic use. Reduction of waste, including plastic and food, is one of the challenges named in SDG 12 and this discussion will present practical initiatives and strategies from those leading on implementation of SDG 12 through the One Planet network. Initiatives will be presented from civil society, the private sector and government, under the umbrella of the UN 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production. The event will build on the resolutions agreed at UNEA 4 under “Promoting sustainable practices and innovative solutions for curbing food loss and waste” and “Innovative pathways to achieve sustainable consumption and production”. Governments and the private sector have already committed to reduce waste, both food and plastic, but more can be done. How can we fast-track meaningful action to achieve SDG 12 – the sustainable development goal which lies behind the achievement of so many of the other goals – and increase momentum and commitments to accelerate the urgent transformational change needed to reduce waste? Everyone on Earth is affected by the impacts of food and plastic waste. This conversation will be universal and supports the view that no one should be left behind. Approaches to minimisation of food and plastic waste must be equitable and accessible: this event will showcase the strategies and arguments for enabling cases of how to reduce food waste and single-use plastics in the hospitality sector (hotel, restaurants). • Inform about successful approaches to reduce waste from private and public sector • Present tools and pilot projects to reduce plastic and food waste • Increase momentum and commitments to accelerate the urgent transformational change needed to reduce waste • Call for Actions Please see the flyer attached and registration link. If any of you will be in New York, we warmly welcome you to the event. There will be breakfast. Please share with any of your other colleagues or contacts who might be interested.
