Swechha Farm School

  • Published on January 12, 2021
Swechha Farm is a non-traditional education and practice lab, a pop-up institute, for present and future consumers of our world, for future growth. The purpose of the Farm is to engage the community at large on issues of resilience and finding long-term solutions to ecological degradation, health and poverty. It’s designed as a Learning Centre – hub for ecological design innovation and incubation, sustainable agriculture, environmental practices, life-skills and personality enhancement programs.
Objectives of the project include : 1. To engage the community at large, especially young people, on issues of resilience and finding long-term solutions to ecological degradation, health and poverty 2. To inspire action and catalyse communities for a regenerative and sustainable world, one with low impact and high quality lifestyles. 3. To unleash human creativity and develop solidarity in our world, for planet and its people to thrive peacefully and equitably. The farm school project is a mix of sustainability, resilience and environmental stewardship with salient features including regenerative & traditional agricultural practices, a state of the art indigenous and native tree species nursery, apiculture and bee-keeping, prototype vermi-composting units & insect hotels, and a butterfly and herb garden. Swechha has been working on issues of education for sustainability and environment for last two decades, linking life-skills and citizenship to the core of the ‘green’. We have designed curriculums and transacted them across Schools and Universities, reaching out to over half a million young people directly over years. Our objective through the farm school learning project would be to engage and train youth (specifically from our school partners), as well as other civil society members, on some of the best environmental practices that promote sustainability and resilience. In addition to the above mentioned features, our team has designed training modules and farm school curriculums focussed on direct engagement with our youth partners at the farm school. Our farm school model is based on the principal of 'learning by doing' and has a major focus on outdoor education, and experiential learning, across all its core activities. Swechha has been working on issues of education for sustainability and environment for last two decades, linking life-skills and citizenship to the core of the ‘green’. We have designed curriculums and transacted them across Schools and Universities, reaching out to over half a million young people directly over years. We have planted forests, set up vegetable gardens, created butterfly and herb parks in communities and Schools, engaged thousands of volunteers in cleaning up our rivers and lakes, worked on environmental policies through our various campaigns and research work, among many other initiatives and interventions. Our aim over the course of the next few years, through this farm school project, is to develop a model Learning Centre – hub for ecological design innovation and incubation, sustainable agriculture, environmental practices, life-skills and personality enhancement programs. To develop a space that inspires action and catalyzes communities for a regenerative and more sustainable world, one with low impact and high quality lifestyles. Some of the expected impacts and results we aim to achieve through our farm school project include : - Direct engagement and outreach with over 50 schools each year through farm school workshops, curriculum transaction, and experiential learning based activities - Facilitation of outdoor learning programs, one day exposure visits, trainings and farm stay experiences for youth and civil society members -Volunteering opportunities for youth partners - Rolling out Fellowship programs for youth around issues of environment and sustainability at the farm
